If your going to buy one, take one of your dsm buddies with you, one that's done a decent amount of work to his own car, just so he can check out all the little stuff you need to look for when buying a used dsm.
DEFINITELY replace the timing belt and do a full tune up as soon as you get it, most of the time when dsm's break, it's from poor maintenence or from being constantly abused by previous owners.

lol, i know they throw timing belts, but i have a couple of buddys who have them and have replaced them before so i figure if i got one i would just go ahead and replace that kind of stuff right away and i think that would get me through the next few years of college
You think timing belts are the only thing wrong

Wait until you're in a rush and you blow some intercooler couplers that's always fun. Hey thats nothing compared to a little something called crankwalk. I'm not saying that they're a bad car(lol) but you're damn fool if you're going to trust one as a DD.

Go over to DSMTalk and they'll tell you how those cars are the golden standard of performance and how much Mustangs suck and how they kill them all. Then you go into the tech section and everyones car is broken down
Hold much of a grudge there, chief?
and I'm sure they were talking about your mustang, not all of them
A slight grudge lol...I guess you can say I haven't gotten over that yet

Any Mustang period. I've never met a group that hated another group so much.

Thats true and its wierd most guys on here respect dsm's and what they can do, but you say that a mustang is a cabable car on a dsm board... watch out

I just bought one...a 1st gen, 6-bolt, awd, turbo...my dad was the guys mechanic from the day he got it...after 12 years, they had to replace the turbo and ECU. after 14 years, the stock clutch went south. Everything else on the car is original....just because a bunch of high school kids buy them and thrash them and complain on forums when they break, doesnt make them bad cars.

That's what I thought too. I figured it depended on how you treated it and people just exagarated the unreliability. new clutch, flywheel, blah blah stuff like that. 24x miles after I bought it...bam shuts down on the highway and gets this crazy ticking noise. Then you can't rev it past like 3000. Go get it checked out...the crank

That being said I would love to own another one. Either a 2G auto(in an attempt to avoid crankwalk) or a clean 1G like ROTM obtained. I just wouldn't let it be my one and only car.
