So the other night after work a buddy of mine came to show me his EVO IX, he even let me drive it which was pretty cool. Nice car! I usually NEVER race on the streets. But I really havewanted to race an EVO forever and have somehow have never gotten matched up withone at the track. So I decided to race him from a roll getting onto the freeway (I'm such a hypocrite!). We went from 50ish to 95ish and I had about 1/2 to 3/4 cars on him and was pulling so I shut down. From adig it could have been much different I'm thinking.

The guy was a pretty new driver so maybe that may have helped me beat him, but I am still not too proud of it because I like to race from a dig at the track. That's the only for sure way to know IMO.

I thought EVO IV's were faster than that? Feedback anybody?

PS. He said he had a racing clutch and a lightweight flywheel.

 

You will take him every time from a dig until he learns to launch that awd right.. when he does, expect him to jump u by a car or car and a half right off the line.. in my experience you will start pulling on him when you get into 3rd gear and from there on you will overtake him. At least thats how it goes when me and my friend race...pretty even until 85 or so..sometimes we were dead even the whole race.. one person would win by like 1/4 car.. fun race..which reminds me.. i need some better tires so i can launch!!

 

That sounds pretty similar how the race went, once I put it in 3rd I just started pulling away from the 1/2 to 3/4 lengths that I had initially. Yeah, I'm on my stock tires as well. I can never break 2.0 60's on my stockers! [:@]

 

Well, since I don't own either cars I have no choice but to bench race...lol

I'll say when he gets the feel of his car and knows how to launch I think you won't start to pass him until after your in fourth gear at speeds over 105-110mph..(I assume the S197 with stock gearing is at the bottom of fourth gear at speeds above 100mph)

The Evo's run low 13's and with your mods your car is a solid mid 13....So I don't see you overtaking him until after the 1320 which S197's usually trap 105mph......

Mine tops out in 3rd right around 100mph with stock 3.55's.

Stock 3.31's should top out a bit higher in 3rd.

How old is his car? An EVO IV, or did you mean an EVO IX? Stock for stock an EVO would 9 out of 10 times rip an S197 a new one. They run low 13's stock compared to 13.6-13.7 for a manual S197. From a roll with your mods you should be able to take an EVO, but from a dig, it might be close, but I bet in a 1/4 mile race you lose still, especially after he learns to launch the AWD.

I will just have to race him again when he learns how to drive it actually! But hopefully I should soon have some CMDP's, electric h20 pump and some UDP's.

His car had what I think is called a "two step rev limiter"? I am not sure what it is called but when you're stopped and the car is in 1st with the clutch in and you rev it, it just bounces between 5k and 7k. That should help him launch the sh*t out of his car, no? Is that even the ideal launch rpm for the EVO's?
