2nd gear burnout...

Bah...on street tires I just spin the tires over for .3 seconds and roll to the line. 2nd gear burnout? That's pretty hardcore.

I got DRs and many of the comments refer to DRs...

Dude, DONT DO IT. trust me you dont need 2nd gear burnout. just burn them on 1st gear. start in water box and roll out of water box and try to burn them ondry ground and roll to staging line. Your car will H-O-O-K.
as i mentioned above, hardcore racers might wanna consider 2nd gear burnout so they can all the power to the ground. my buddy has 470+rwhp car with like 450rwtq and i told him to burn them up on dry ground and he did burn them for like 3-4 secs on 1st gear and dumped the clutch at 5k RPM and hooked like a ****.
i totally disagree people who suggest to people here doing 2nd or 3rd gear burnout. it is better burnout and it makes your tire very hot which makes them hook great but are we having traction problems with slicks with 300-400hp cars????
another thing is, if you don't have slicks, you don't wanna do 2nd gear burnout no matter what you put down cuz with nittos if you do 2nd gear butnout, it won't hook any better. with nittos you dont wanna rev up very high and dump cuz they ain't slicks, they will spin. with nittos you wanna rev up 3-4k and play with the cluch at launch and it will work great.
these are my opinion.

so would you start in 2nd? or shift to get there?

Correct - the mistake most beginners make in a burnout is watching their rpm's. What you should be focused on is your MPH. A decent burnout, you want the mph to be in the 50-60 mph rabge for a good 3 seconds. Now the second gear comes into play depending on your gearing set-up in your car. If you can reach 50-60 mph in 1st then that's what you use. If it takes 2nd, then that's what you use - easy peasy...

Remember, it's not how much smoke you shoot up, it's how fast your tires are spinning that makes them the hottest.

Don't care what anyone says, the MPH is the key...period. On good DR's or slicks, you want to see at least 50 mph during the burnout. Also adjust your tire psi to your burnout. A 50 mph burnout for 3 sec is going to raise your psi 1-2 psi so compensate for that in your initial psi setting.
Doodad & Mark,
Thanks.... I guess considering the 3.55s and 435hp...BFG DRs.... I'll at least start out using a 1st gear burnout... and adjust from there. No way I'll hit 50mph... but will try for a 3-4 seconds...

Start in 2nd and dump the clutch. I am referring to a GOOD DR or slick with some power backing it up. On street tires, a burnout is not only not neccessarry but can actually hurt your times. A simple dry hop to shake them off is all you need. Again, gearing coimes into play. Usually 4.10+ gears are when you may find 2nd gear neccessarry to get the 50 mph. For most guys, 1st works fine.

2nd gear burnout > 1st gear burnout but my point is, you don't have to do 2nd gear burnout unless you are making good amount of power and you are gonna launch it very hard. I am amazed how my slicks Hooks when i do a 3-4 sec 1st gear burnout and i put down great low end torque (480lbs.)
stkjock, which kind of tires you have?

thanks for the kind and optomistic words!!!
once I get'm spinning....I should hold the brake?

once I get'm spinning....I should hold the brake?
-back up to burnout box
-once your tires are in the water, drive a little bit forward (the end of water box)
-rev up to 6k RPM and dump the clutch and very quickly get on brakes
-don't hit the brakes too hard otherwise it will be hard to roll them. just hit the bakes enough so the car doesn't move.
-do as long as you want and once you think you are done, keep your foot on the gas and let the brake off and the car will go forward while spning and that last touch will make the tires smooth , hot and nice. go stage and leave on the last yellow.
P.S. you will most likely have trouble burning them first time isnc eit is the first time but don't worry about it. you will be fine on next runs once you get used to it. don't expect anything great on first couple runs. just learn from your mistakes on your previous runs and next time you line up don't do those mistakes again and i think you should run some good times.
