For the last 15 years or so the mustang has been cheaper, lighter, less power and not as quick as the camaro...which will probably still be the case when the new camaro comes out. This is with the exception of the 5.0 fox bodies which were far superior until the LT1.
How do you figure the 5.0 was better than the 3rd gen camaro? The IROC-Z won the best handling north american car award twice and after they started dropping in the corvette engine (350) they would out run the mustangs in the 1/4 too. which means it accelarated faster and handled better. (and looked alot better imo)
regardless of what the magazine racer times will tell you, its not much of a race between the iroc and a properly driven 5.0 fox. I have seen this go down too many times to count.

Camaro didn't have anything on the fox drag racing wise until the LT1 came out.

Would seem better to compare the new Camaros to the Mustang instead of the new Vettes. No matter what, same model year, the vette will be faster than a Mustang GT. Just seems like the Mustang will need a blower/serious motor work to beat a Vette, of the same model year, so I don't see much use in trying to compare the two. [&:]
The two were never meant to be compared, the only reason they do is because the GM ended the pony wars with the cancellation of production of all f-bodies. The vette is a two seater sports car while the mustang always has been and always will be a muscle car with back seats and a trunk(well at least a trunk). You guys have to stop comparing apple to oranges. Not to mention with all the cash you save from buying a stang instead of a vette, a KB blower could be a great investment.

What really remains to be seen is what kind of price tag GM puts on the camaro/firebird. Lets hope they don't pull another GTO and do something stupid, like only offering a V8 and pricing the base model well over 30K.

The mustang needs a good competitor to keep it sharp, without a direct competition there isn't much reason for ford to keep improving it with sales being so well off.

Wow.......nobody compared the performance of the Vette and the Mustang. I just said that even though the C6 is in pretty much its own class based on price and power, Chevy still decided to give it some more go, whereas the mustang is in its own class on the lower end of the spectrum based on price/power, and Ford is waiting for other cars to be introduced to compete with the musang that will stomp it. If anything was compared it was GM and Ford. Nobody expects mustangs to beat vettes, so I dont know why you guys are all whining about so many people making comparisons that never happened.

I'm pretty sure whatever Cobra comes out around 09 will edge out the camaro as far as performanceand probably cost at least a couple thousand more. It just depends on how much you want to spend. The mustang will costprobably cost considerably less than a camaro and be not quite as good as a performer.
If you could actually get an 07 Cobra for sticker that would be a great bang for the buck....
IMO

I hadn't thought of that but now that you mention it, the C6 and the new Mustang were both introduced in 05 and since then GM has added a 6 speed auto, introduced a new more powerful engine and updated the interior again. Other then the packaging options what has Ford really done with then new Mustang?

They don't need too...honestly they could leave it as is for another 5 years and still sell the hell out of it. Why spend money on R&D when you don't need too?

That may have been true in the 90's but, thinking like that now days will get you in big trouble. Look at whats on the horizon Dodge will have a nitro in a year or so with 280 hp in the low 20's. Chevyhas a 260hp HHR this coming year rumored to be in the mid 20's fully loaded. I know these aren't theMustangs competitionbut if Ford sets on the Mustang as is for another 5 years they will be the laughing stock of the industry. Could you imagine a 300hp Mustang GT being out performed by four banger corss-over utes.

Those two dont count. Those arent improvements on what you get for your money when you buy a new GT, those are different cars.
