A bit late but you can make a boost controller for about $20 with parts from Home Depot

I've pondered the thought many times and they are not really easier/respond better to mods. The 6 bolt blocks have weaker pistons and the 7 bolt blocks have weaker rods so they are both limited to around 400-450 hp just like our cars. Sure they can handle more boost pressure but that doesn't really matter. A 20g/50 trim or equivilant setup should run you at least $2500. You can get a S/C for around that(I believe SOHCTimes paid $2300) and that'll put you right next to them.

the 1st gens are great cars for going cheap fast, the fox body of the import world.

4g63 will usually take quite a bit more boost stock

especially since the 7mgte hits fuel cut at like 11 or 12 psi

i own a 92 awd gsx eclipse...its auto tho which sucks....i read about the free mods farther up in forum.....how do i open up air tract to intercooler??? and where is and how do i remove boost restrictor???
For the intercooler, pull out the plastic cover in behind the front passenger wheel, and replace it with wire mesh. The boost restrictor solenoid is underneath your air filter/can.

And for whoever asked about prices, you can find nice ones for $2,500-$4,000 anywhere from stock to full-race setups. Got mine stock for $2500.
On the original question, the 2 cars should be pretty even stock, but like someone said, you will rarely see a stock first gen.

Do you have DSMLink? If not then listing the Eprom ECU as a mod is useless

I'm still running a manual boost controller with close to 700 crank horsepower The only real downside is that you have to do shakedown runs in between map switches to get your boost dialed back in... ie stop on the side of the road, pop the hood, turn the allen key, hop back in, see where you're at, rinse, repeat etc. etc.

Another easy way to get cheap speed out of a boosted car is to install a stiffer wastegate spring. On my old WRX I put a wastegate helper spring on my port/polished VF34 (JDM STi turbo) and it helped it quite a bit with building boost quickly and from bleeding off boost at redline.

what do they range in prices anyway if they're that easy to mod and make fast
Dont even think about buying one. DSMs are terrible IMO, some of the most unreliable engines on the planet, and honestly, i dont think the power gains are that impressive. Just my $.02

They're not that bad. Well mines did break down so....lol

They can be made fast but honestly people overexagarate them. People swear they are going to run 12s for 1-2k but almost nobody does. A good 16G setup should run you 2k+ and with a good tune and good driving in an AWD car you can run 12s. People have bought used S/C kits for that much and ran the same times. I'm comparing them to the 2Vs right now. If you spend all your money on useless bolt-ons with these 2Vs then of course the DSM is going to be faster. Now spend it were it counts and you'll find out that the 4G63 is not all its hyped up to be. It's internally limited at around the same amount of power.

Now if we're talking about a FWD car then 99% of the people are ****ed. 50 trim setups not leaving the 13s
