OK here's the deal
option one i could buy a 1989 coupe with a 351w for $900 making ~ 350hp


or i could buy a Fox body Roller, and put a 429 making 350hp stock and put a new cam intake carb and home port the head and make ~450hp and ~500ftlbs.....i could do that with $2140

i've got this in the 351 section, but i need the S&S section opinions too.

 

Depends. What are your intentions for the car?

 

the short run is a high Hp drag car, but in the long run a road racer.
the Bb weighs 640, but you can shave 100#'s off just by aluminum heads, and with a **** load of suspension and body stiffening i think it would be one hell of a road racer.

 

keep the big block man... i would love the ability to get one, and you can make those old mustangs into some dam nice track cars...

 

351 all the way, they have a big aftermarket and alot of parts are designed to fit in foxes (ie turbo's super chargers etc)

 

wouldnt need a turbo/super for the BB... N/A they can be monsters... also keeps it simpler.

 

Here's my 2 cents: 1/4 mile drag car.........429 BB; road racing car...........351W. Obviously you could manage either type of racing with either choice, but ideally you want more cubes for straight line big power....and a tighter powerband for a road racer. Personally, I'd love the idea of having a 429 under the hood. But if you're serious about the type of racing you intend to get into......you have to make smart decisions based on each motor's strengths and weaknesses.

BTW, are we talking about a production Ford 429.........or a crate motor?

the 429 has a "short" stroke, and with the right cam/intake, you can achieve that tight power band couldnt you?

 

slapping a super charger on a 351 is alot more simple than installing a big block in a fox body

 

the Turbo/ SC setup will cost as much as the car and motor. about what 4k.....ok i got it built on paper and the car so far is only ognna cost ~2200. 4k into the BB = p51 heads 2500 ( 75hp 100ftlbs) and 1500 into a 477 im puttin 570 to the wheels. and -100lb from the weight

what kind of power would the 351 yield.
