It has nothing to do w/ freedom in my opinion. It's about personal responsibility. Here's a scenario for ya- Your kid is on the way home from school. Normal day; they're driving down the road doing the speed limit. Some woman cruising along in her Suburban XL putting on her makeup, or texting on her phone crosses the centerline, hits your kid head-on, and kills them. Said woman has no kids, or any other reason to justify owning said Suburban. Now, you sitting there pondering why someone so careless would drive something that would others at increased risk due to her lack of driving ability, are told by the woman's husband- "Hey man, this is America my wife can drive whatever the hell she wants. It's a free country." Now, what would your response be???? You see what we're saying here??? Sportscars are far less wasteful and dangerous than the masses of SUV's you see clusterf#cked at every redlight. Freedom comes at a cost, and to take advantage of it and abuse the privileges you are given as an American, is a slap in the face to those who pay their lives to secure that freedom..........

She should know not to put make up on, or god forbid text while driving. So, this would be called a moot point.
EDIT:
Hell, lets use your points on other things.
- No one needs HDTV's, they cost more in electricity bills and more upfront.
- No one needs more than 1 MP digital cameras, they cost more and use more memory to store them.
- No one needs to buy name brand soda, they both taste about the same, so why pay another $.25 for Dr.Pepper when you can have the generic.
- No one needs a GPS unit, they cost way more than maps do, and use more elecricity.

The tone of this article is much more subjective than is necessary. I can't be convinced that any form of legislation could permanently kill muscle cars. Possibly muscle cars as we know it (however unlikely), but never cars that are engineered to go fast. Ever heard of the Tesla Roadster? 0-60 in under 4 seconds. All electric. The Ariel Atom is another example of amazing sportiness and great economy. Cars like this, while diverging greatly from our current popular sports cars, could possibly fill the void if V8s went the way of the dinosaur. However, I stress that I don't believe our Mustangs, or any other muscle car, is truly in danger of extinction.
And regarding the side thread that has emerged about large vehicles: I am also annoyed by overly large vehicles that serve no purpose to the driver. I know some people utilize the off road / towing / hauling capabilities of these vehicles, but I shudder everytime I see the neighborhood H2 with bright orange paint, spinners, and a brown note producing sound system. I am also annoyed by the people who drive their Ram 8500 Trilies or F-1050 Hexcabs to class and I have to engage in an akward trade off with the person going in the opposite direction in the parking garage to get around the behemoth that hangs out well into the driveway.
Funny I read about this now. Tonight, I was waiting in front of Kroger for my mom to get some Christmas supplies when a single, bluetooth-toting man in a black Escalade parks in the frontmost handicapped spot, leaves his SUV running with lights on, and emerges from Kroger a few minutes later with a 6-pack of Heneken. God Bless America.

Precisely. Someone should have gone and slashed his tires while he was in the store. Then when he came out, taken a ballbat to his knees. Then next time he'd have a reason to use that handicapped parking stall.......[sm=chairshot.gif]

Well the personal responsibility thing boils down on the womans part too.

No, it's not a moot point. If she had been driving something that was actually practical the results probably wouldn't have been so severe. And it's the drivers of those vehicles you usually drive like they don't have any damn sense.
But forthe sake ofarguement-
1) Our electricity sources aren't going anywhere anytime soon. And I don't own an HDTV.
2) That's strictly based on money. I could care less how someone spends their money.
3) Same as above. And there is a taste difference between brands.
4) GPS is a waste. Learn how to use an F'ing map.
Do you really mean to tell me there is no difference between the single rapper who owns an Escalade, a Rang Rover, and an H2 as his daily drivers and someone who bought an HDTV. Put things into perspective, and look at the grand scheme of things.....

- Our fuel sources aren't going anywhere soon either.
- If the rapper can afford those things, then let him spend his money on them if they are legal. And seeing how 99% of drivers don't own all three of those, or even one of those cars, this point is a little shakey.
- With the arguement you are using that people don't need something big that uses more power to run, and is more expensive up-front and in the long run. I'd have to say there really is not a difference.
- You'd be suprised at how many people buy GPS units. Better jump on one of the GPS forums and tell them to recycle their unit and use an f'in map.
