this is horrible
I think this is a good thing, it will force (or potentially force) car manufacturers to make their engines more effecient....90% of the time a more effecient engine is going to be a more powerfull engine
Plus I would love the idea of a 35+ mpg mustang that would be sweet, I only drive my mustang once and a while (not at all in the winter) and it feels like everytime I bring it out I have to fill the damn thing up with gas[8D]

Maybe I'm missing something but I thought the CAFE requirement was for combined driving. The vette, mustang and a bunch of other cars can get 30mpg on the highway, but not in the city. But I agree with ROTM....heeelllooooooo gas guzzler tax.

seriously in my mind all this means is buh bye excursions and rediculously HUGE suv's/trucks for the average people. They need to only sell these vehicles to people who need them and can prove they need them. I'm sick of seeing people with super-duties and one 2x4 in the bed. If you don't need that **** get something smaller. Btw if we make the switch to e85 with this, i wonder if they will rate it using actual gallons of GASOLINE used or e85, cause you need more e85 to equal the btu's of gasoline, which would **** this law up even more.

Tell me 8cd03gro. How many people need 300+ horsepower 3000pound vehicles on the streets, unless you professionally race at a track should you not have a Dodge Caliber, Ford focus, Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, etc...What would be next, telling me what clothes I can wear while I am at my house? Telling me what brand of softdrink I must drink? I can go on and on about this as I am speaking about my freedom. If you oppose freedom perhaps a communistic society is right for you.
I doubt this "legislation" will be the end of the musclecar.
And about those SUV's... There is no need for them. You can transport your 2 or 3 kids just as well in a big sedan, which will always get better gas mileage due to being less of a drag. And there is no need for trucks either, unless you need it for work / you haul stuff around in your free time.
But I am already seeing a shift on the roads here. More and more small cars on the road. And some are very interesting. Like the mini cooper S, which I have driven personally. It goes like stink, it had the works package, and gets 20 mpg city and as much as 35 highway. Small cars don't mean you'll have to put up with driving ricers. In Europe they have the Focus ST (17city/34hwy/25comb 0-62 in 6.8 and top of 149), 207 RC (23city/42hwy/32comb 0-62 in 7.1 and top of 136) and the Astra GTC OPC (18city/33hwy/25comb 0-62 in 6.4 and top of 151) for instance. Front wheel "wonders" yes, but wonderfull cars to drive. Some of that stuff has to end up here sooner or later.

Hey Justice, You ready to give up your stang as you dont need it. Perhaps trade it for a Merker xr4ti? or a focus svt? If they do this the next trend will be that cars need not go faster then the speed limit. so will manufactures detune them to go no more than 75 mph (fastest speed limit I have seen)?
It has nothing to do w/ freedom in my opinion. It's about personal responsibility. Here's a scenario for ya- Your kid is on the way home from school. Normal day; they're driving down the road doing the speed limit. Some woman cruising along in her Suburban XL putting on her makeup, or texting on her phone crosses the centerline, hits your kid head-on, and kills them. Said woman has no kids, or any other reason to justify owning said Suburban. Now, you sitting there pondering why someone so careless would drive something that would others at increased risk due to her lack of driving ability, are told by the woman's husband- "Hey man, this is America my wife can drive whatever the hell she wants. It's a free country." Now, what would your response be???? You see what we're saying here??? Sportscars are far less wasteful and dangerous than the masses of SUV's you see clusterf#cked at every redlight. Freedom comes at a cost, and to take advantage of it and abuse the privileges you are given as an American, is a slap in the face to those who pay their lives to secure that freedom..........
the same woman can be driving a nissan maxima, same scenario and still have casualties. Responsibility comes with everything.
Scenario #2.
Someone is driving on a road/street three lanes each direction. at a red light is a Mustang gt, a Civic (Ricer) and a B.M.W. M3. light turns green it is around 9 at night, no traffic they go for it. 1/3 block down a Teenager or adult or senior citizen (pick one or more) are getting into there car after picking up someting from a store. the car in the right lane gets a front flat tire, loses control at 60 mph and slams into the innocent person. We can go hypothetical all day.
Point I am trying to make is Trucks, not Suvs have a purpose even if not just as a work vehicle. and if fuel is a problem, I personally run waste vegetable oil in my truck. I get about 15.5 miles per gallon and still run 15.54 at 90 mph. I take my family on trips, I go off roading and we use it for shopping. Daily driver. bigger then a Mustang or Corvette? yup. Used for work? Nope. Is the trucked bed used? Absolutely.
My question is and this goes against the original post. Should I not have the option of buying my truck simply because I do not use it for work purposes?
