Lightnings are awesome for what they are...but if you are getting a truck to pull anything over 5,000lbs i'd look else where.

 

SC Lightnings are like SC Cobras.... They are the raw material you start with.
The biggest issue with the trucks from that standpoint is the stock powdered metal rods.

 

Meeehhh, you might end up paying a little more for it, perhaps a couple grand, but I'd get a mid to low mileage 03' or 04'. Those seem to be the most reliable, and best performing on the model's I've seen. Though like Gene said, they still have the crap rods in them, so you'll need to go forged eventually. I wouldn't be able to tell you exactly on insurance, though like the others have said your insurance company should be able to give you a pretty accurate quote, because a lot of that depends on where you live, and what your driving record is like, how many cars you have insured with them, etc etc. If it's any good indicator, I'm paying 168 or so a month on my mach, living in TX, and my driving record isn't exactly sparkling, so I'd venture a guess between 90-120 a month, maybe less depending on where you're at. Anywhere on the east coast, or the far north is going to be more though.

I've seen stock 03's run mid 13's at Kennedale before with a good river, so it's definitely possible. I had a guy in an 04 KB lightning keep up with me in the mach almost up to 120 from a 60-ish roll before, so it's a really good S/C platform I think, just heavy as all hell.
