Default My 05 GT vs. Small Block S10

Raced my buddy's small block S10 tonight. He doesn't have the trans tuned yet so it wasn't at its full potential. Had him by about 4 cars. Rolled from 40-45.

It was a 94 (I think?) S10 with a 4.3, well he spun a bearing so swapped in a 350 from a 96 C1500. Using the stock 4L60E with a trans controller and shift kit. Engine is stock, has LT headers with electronic cutouts (such a cool toy)

so it's basically a 245bhp 345btq Vortec engine. not to shabby of engine, just not a lot up top.

Good run. Thats an interesting set-up he has in the S10. He wouldn't have much trouble getting a lot more out of it if he wanted to. Heads, cam, and a stall would make for a pretty stout truck.

port the stockers even. iirc the LS heads were similarly designed. stock Vortec heads flow quite well. the only downfall is they can't really handle a cam much larger than .480-.500" lift.

Looks like its a 5700 Vortec which is a 1st gen design...the heads are similar to the LT1 so I'm surprised the heads would limit them much. I know the LT1 head was able to hit 350-360rwhp cam only. I don't know much about them so help me out here, what limits the lift?

the valve spring seats iirc. you have to machine them down in order to get beyond a .480" lift cam.

i mean i've found flow chart numbers for the head showing 239cfm @ 28" water with .500" lift on the intake side. same place showed stock LS1 heads flowing 240cfm @ 28" water with .500" lift.

i mean they out flow the LT1 heads stock.

a stock L31 Vortec is a true stump puller though. makes the LT1's seem like high rpm monsters lol. 285ft/lbs of torque @ 1900rpm, peaking at 330ft/lbs @ 2500rpm. only makes 255bhp though. would be a good bit higher if it wasn't a 9:1 engine.

here's what you have to do to get higher lift on the cam. stock valve springs aren't very tall and the engine is setup for 1.5 ratio rockers.

Iron head LT1s (Impala) actually flow 230 @ .500... they don't go to .600 though like the aluminum heads so maybe there is something to that?? Thanks for the info ...that might explain why the flow at .500 is better I never realized their was a difference in the heads aside from the cast material.
