Default Spring Questions

I have an 88' hatch. I can pick up three Eibach Pro-kit springs (one rear/two front) for $30. I can't seem to find anywhere that will sell a pair of rears to complete this set on the cheap. Part #3510.140

Any suggestions? I'm looking to get some lowering springs on the cheap, but want to stick with quality brand, etc. I've seen the SVE springs for like $100 new, but the spring rates are not the same as Eibach, BBK, Ford Racing, etc.

Eibach is not often considered a "quality brand", next to soo many others available.

I would NOT buy used springs anyway and certainly not when one is missing! Why is it missing, by the way? Either way, you really need to get shocks/struts as well, to have a quality riding and nice handling car, when you are done.

What are the ULTIMATE goals for your ride?

Thanks for the response.

I was looking for used springs to save a few bucks. I've got a lot of things to spend money on outside of the suspension. I thought springs really didn't "go bad". He said he had three because his buddy was parting a car and sold the car as a whole prior to getting the fourth off. I thought I could just buy a pair rather than just replace the one.

I have the kyb gas adjust shocks on the car, they are new. Everything else is stock. I'd like a better handling car, but the goal right now is to lower it a little bit. I have a large gap in the wheel wells. It's got 99-04' 17" wheels on it.

So why is it a bad idea to buy used springs?

What are good springs to buy?

Don't think I actually answered your question in order for you to answer mine.

It is a street car with occasional auto-cross. Just want something better than stock and to lower it a bit.

The issue with used springs, and particularly Eibach has this reputation, is they can sag over time. This makes them a somewhat unique length and the rebound is not likely to be consistant with another you want to match up. May not be a big difference, but will respond differently on both sides of the car and likely not sit level.

If you are looking to do AX, I recommend the following...... Don't do ANY mods to your car and go out and AX it just as it is! AX is a "driver mod" endeavor and best to learn these skills on as OEM as possible a car. Suspension mods can help you "cheat" yourself out of good driving techniques, by letting you get away with what may be bad habbits. Learning to compensate for understeer/oversteer issues, without the help of suspension improvements, WILL make you a better driver. Being a better driver will help to understand the benefits of those suspension mods you DO end up installing.

Seriously, hit up 5~6 AX events, if you haven't already, and look into getting a brand new set of springs. Do this only AFTER you have considered my "big bold red lettered sentence" near the top of the Official Suspension Guide link found in my sig and the mainpage of this section of MF's.

One other thing - even if nothing else has been done to your car, swapping its springs will take you out of "F Stock" and at least put you and your car up against generally more experienced drivers and more heavily modified cars in E Street Prepared or whatever Street Touring class they're putting these cars in.

Not that being "up-classed" is a bad thing if you're just in it for fun (it is pretty neat when you beat the more heavily modified guys on raw time). But it might get a bit discouraging if/when you turn "serious".
