Where is the most power to be made? Full exhaust? Intake? Aftermarket heads? What holds these engines back?

5.0 cars are great candidates for nitrous. How about these? Do people like to throw, say, a 75 shot at these? Is nitrous more dangerous on these cars?

Finally- the T45. These are notoriously weak. Will they hold up to daily driver duty with a few mods (Bolt ons + 4.10s)? How much does a good replacement transmission cost for these motors.

I have been searching to try to find all of the information I can about these cars. I love the 4V power. I like the styling of these ones, and the menacing "Cobra" on the rear bumper.I am really considering one of these sn95 snakes.
Hi . I,m new to this site , i was just going over some of the posts and i thought i would chime in . I have a 1997 Cobra that i bought new . In 1998 i installed a Supercharger , in 1999 along came the aftercooler , 36 lb injectors , Anderson Power pipe , Sean Hyland fuel rails and short line kit , BBK twin 62mm T/B ., Pro M 77 Maf , I also installed Superior 31 spline axles , 4.10 Ring / Pinion , Powertrax locking diff , weld in sub frame conectors , oh , and a Centerforce Clutch . Sean did the tunning back then using a Superchips Chip. Until now the only problem i have had is the Centerforce. That lasted less then 8000 KM,s . replaced it with a Regular Ford unit ( less then half the cost ) 15000 KM,s back , car still runs great , excellent gas millage as long as you dont beat on it . Car makes 450 rwhp and 380 rwt. Original T45 still in place .

Well that's good to hear... I just bought a 96 Cobra and after reading this I was thinking "damn, Im gonna need a T-56 sooner than I thought." Haha, that is the plan for down the road... but right now I want to work on other go-fast parts. I'll do a T-56, aluminum flywheel, and aluminum driveshaft when the clutch gets weak. Until then, the T-45 needs to live haha.

Just to comment on the transmission, the 96s, 97s, and early 98s were equipped with a borg warner t45... These transmission are crap and will only last on a near stock power cobra. Later in 1998 SVT switched over to the tremec t45, which was much improver over it borg warner counterpart, but still lacked some needed strength...
I have the borg warner t45. Has 145k miles on it, 30k which have been supercharger at 420rwhp and mine doesnt even grind a synco on a high rpm shift, and its been far from babied. Also the car has been more than reliable at 420rwhp. Its been beat at the track, beat on the road, burnouts/powershifts/donuts its done it all. Alot of people just regurgitate information and problems they read people have had with them. Just like anything else it can break, but to say its junk or wont hold up is a false statement because my car is running proof. I know a guy locally has an 03 cobra with 56k miles with j ust a tune and pulley and he blew his t56 to smitherines, but that doesnt meant its a junk tranny and unreliable at anything but stock powerlevel, sheyot happens.

I think what most people forget is that these transmissions were designed for Cars making 305 hp ( factory flywheel horsepower ). With the Superchargers added , these can bring the power numbers up to upwards of 500 to 550 hp . Thats an increase of 65 yo 70 % .

I fail to see where you are trying to go with this. Yes the transmission was rated for a car with 305 horsepower, but that doesn't mean by supercharged the car that its GURANTEED you're trans is just gonna implode on you. My t-45 is a prime example of that. Now yes some people blow them up but its no different than any other car on the market. A t56 that came with an 03-04 is no different. When ford designed the car they designed the rest of the drivetrain based on a car making 390 horsepower, but does that mean the trans is instantly garbaged for a 500-600 horse car, no it doesn't it is just a gamble like anything else. I've seen t-45 blow up and t-56 blow up on pullied 04s. In no way am I saying the T-56 is not the better transmission and it is a stout platform but back to the point it was designed for a 390 flywheel car, so I fail to see you're point about factory ratings.
