Default Overheating?

Driving home just a few minutes ago I looked down and my temp gauge was nearly 3/4 so i pulled off into a parking lot, steam was coming from under the hood so I popped it and shut her down, coolant was leaking out of the cap so I loosened a little and relieved all the pressure, a lotttt of coolant came out, I filled it up with a few half empty water bottles I had then started it..was at normal temp now..drove it home..let it idle in the driveway for a few minutes..no overheating or anything..no coolant spilling out..but my heat was cold on the 3-4 minute ride home, no warmth to it at all, just blowing cold air.

What's up with all this? First I thought my cap was bad..ok replace cap and be good..tightened it down and it didn't leak anymore but I haven't really put it to the test..if it were bad why would my heat be cold?

Well I added coolant when I got home since almost all spilled out..burped the system a few times..drove it for a while today and went to school, left school and it did fine on the way to eat and back to school so I'm just going to see what happens I guess
