Mystic Cobra Paint
#51
I haven't taken any pics since it was painted, but I took some yesterday to illustrate the problem I have. The two pics on the left were taken at around 9:30, and the two on the right around 11:00 The hood is still the original paint btw. So top left, taken at an angle of 45º or so, she's wearing her burgundy dress and there doesn't seem to be much of a problem at all. Below that, taken from about 30º and a couple of steps further back, the hood is still mostly burgundy, maybe a shade or two lighter, but the top of the fender appears gold. This pic doesn't really do it justice, to the naked eye the difference is much stronger. On the right, taken 90 minutes later, at 45º she appears in her more familiar purple/green outfit, and at 30º shifting back to burgundy. In either of these pics the paint appears to be a perfect match, but I could have taken pics from other viewpoints that would show as much, if not more, difference as in the lower left pic. This is why I say that you need to check lots of different angles under strong light to see the difference in the way the paint shifts. In overcast conditions it can be difficult to see any difference at all. It has just occured to me that it might be better to make a video of a walk-around of the car, I don't have a video camera but I'll see if I can get something with my phone..

curioser and curioser.. I agree the mirror looks a good match to the rest of the car, so now I am left wondering again if they sent you the same paint they sent me. I feel sure that if they had you would see a difference. The last pics I posted perhaps focussed too much on how similar the paint can appear to be, not so much on the differences. The first pic here is one that I sent the supplier showing how bad the match is from certain angles, along with some similar ones to my last post showing how close it can appear from other angles. Their response was that the paint had not been applied properly, or the preparation was poor, or even 'has been sprayed in the wrong direction', basically anything they could think of that might take responsibility away from them. So I asked them to send me a properly prepared sample for comparison, which they did. The second pic shows this sample against the original paint on the hood and the new paint on the fender. This was taken in overcast conditions, but I think anyone would agree that the quality of the paint job is not the issue. I also sent a few other pics from the same viewpoint with the sample at different angles, and in each of these the results were identical, so this rules out the 'sprayed in the wrong direction' nonsense. In the next two pics I took the fuel door off to make it easier to get shots from different angles without having to wait until the sun was in the right position. From these you can see that when the original paint appears mostly burgundy with a slight shift to gold the sample is nearly all gold, and when it's green with the merest hint of blue the sample is all blue. The prospray paint is clearly different to BASF, so why you should be getting a better match than I did is a complete mystery unless we were supplied different paints

Wow yours looks way out in that pic. I am surprised to see how big the difference is! Mine is nothing like that and now I see your point. I'm not just saying this but mine is a fantastic match.
Really baffled by this

The more I think about this I can only conclude that the only explanation is that we were supplied different paint. Sorry to change my mind again, but I really would like to see what you were supplied with and compare it to my car. Do you think you could ask your painter to make up a sample using the same primer and clear coat he used on your mirrors and send it to me? Of course I would pay his charge and postage etc.
