Default How can you tell if a car is tuned?

A friend of mine recently bought an '05 V6 Mustang and it came with an Airaid CAI and dual exhaust. From what we can tell, those are the only performance mods done to it. We wanted to know if its tuned, and if it is, how can we tell if its tuned or not?

Depends...

If the restrictor is removed from the CAI, and it does not throw codes, it is tuned.
If the restrictor is there, it is likely not tuned.

Hook up a tuner to it (you don't need to actually flash the engine) and see if the parameters are not stock.

Sorry, I'm a newbie when it comes to all this stuff. What is the restrictor on the CAI? SilverStallion I don't have a tuner so that's not possible.

I would say not tuned. reason being is the tuner is mated (locked) to that car until reverted back to stock tune. If it were tuned the previous owner would have left the tuner with the car when sold.

conejo that is not true. I bought mine from a dealer and tracked down the previous owner who luckily still had the tuner. A lot of people sell there car then try to sell the tuner later on not realizing that it is locked to the car. That is why you have to be very careful buying a used tuner.

Well said.

Believe me, I get 10 calls a day from people who think they scored the deal of a lifetime when they found a used Predator for $50 on Ebay, then they realize it is locked and they need to spend $129 to unlock it....bummed is the word.

A tune will absolutely fix the problem. Most tuners have presets that allow you to "tell" your car what type of gears it has. Once you "tell" the engine, when you start her up... She will be reading the correct speed.
