Default Overheating

I live in florida and i drive a 96 3.8 earlier today i noticed that the normal drive and the temp needle is under half
and then just took it out for a spin now and it was at 2/3 of the way up which is over half way and its hot as crap. the radiator fan is working with and without the ac turned on car just had a big tuneu p and runs like a dream was just worried about the heat since ive had bad experiences before with ford and overheating. should i check the thermostat ( does it even have one )? or any experiences/recommendations ( nudges yellowpony )

I had a similar problem to my 95 sixer. Mine was that my thermostate got ruined somehow and my rad wasn;t kicking, all i did was head to a garage and got a new thermostae put in...but then again, my car was really damn close to overheating and close to the redline on the temp gauge.
