Default Shift Light Q/A

Was looking back and forth at little mods I could do, and came across the shift light. Found wikis and all other sorts of forums articles on them, and was wondering on a few quick questions. Some are saying that the light automatically detects when to shift, and others state that it needs to be programmed. Which of these is true? If the latter, how will I know what to set it at? Is there some sort of diagnostic I can plug it into that'll tell me, or just a standard? My 2000 V6 is completely unmodded ATM.

If you can already drive the car, why put a shift light? You obviously don't need it, then.

Unfortunately, I am something of a drinker. Whilest I never drink and drive, alot of my different buddies are my DD's, and most of them are not that great at stick, as well as when I get deployed, my mother and sister both aren't either, so I figured I'd get it installed for them. Plus, it's nifty to see a purdy red light turn on sometimes, I suppose. May help me with my shifting measures as well.
