where do you live? it coulda just been cold and the battery could have just been frozen over. doesnt seem too likely though for this time of year, eventhough we've already had snow in some parts of the country.

Default RE: safety switch

I had a problem with my neutral safety switch (I have an automatic) and the problem with it was that it got too hot one day and it decided it didnt want to work so I could change gears out of park. The button on the shifter handle would depress but it wouldnt move for anything. I never even got it fixed I just removed a small link going to the gear box so I dont have to press the brake to change gears.

Oh and the "neutral safety switch" on an auto can be found if you follow your brake pedal up into the inside of the dash (underneath about where the steering wheels located).

All this assuming 94-04 is all relatively the same. My car's a 97 V6.

I'm in guam, so I doubt it got cold....it's about 85 here year round.

It may have gotten too warm. I will take a look at the safety switch, but mine is a manual so I don't know if it really even applies since you don't have to press the brake to start the car, just the clutch.

Thanks for the replies.

Well i do know some cars if it doesnt start the first time you have to put the key in the off position maybe even take the key out and restart the process. We "my job" have to do that with the ford rangers we get in. And for the problem here, i think its the neutral safety switch or the clutch swith... do some research on them.

update.

Car will still not start.

I bypassed the clutch safety switch, still nothing.

I tried jumping it, nothing.

I bought an OBD II reader and it shows no error codes.

I checked the fuses I could see, but I don't have a manual so I don't know what does what.

I have to get a chilton's tomorrow.

Any other ideas?

Can someone take a picture of their engine and point out where the solenoid is? I looked around but I couldn't see it. Like I said I don't have a manual and this is my first mustang, so I am still learning.

I still need to check the reading at the solenoid, try jumping the solenoid and check the switch.

I also checked the fuel pump cutout but that was fine too.

I don't want to have it towed to the ford dealership for something I should be able to fix.

HELP!

the starter solenoid is usually on the starter. about the size of red bull can cut in half. tap it with a hammer, sometimes that works, keyword, TAP don't hit.

I'll try that.

That's on the passenger side?

is it easier to access from the top or the bottom?

i had a defective key once the car would intermitently start and not start i don't recall though if turning the key would engage the gauge lights and radio and stuff there's a chip in the key that's part of the car's passive anti-theft system so if the car's sensor doesn't get the codes from the key's chip the engine won't start.

if u have a spare key try that one and see if the problem goes away if it does have the other one replaced

my experience was with a 1997 V6 stang

thanks to all that replied but I fixed the problem.

I got a couple of friends of mine to push start me so that I could get it home.

I narrowed it down to the starter solenoid.

I replaced it and it works great.

Thanks again.
