v6 vs v8 engine
ORIGINAL: cobra232
he was saying on an internally stock 3.8.
as for frost0526, the ford 3.8 was copied off of the buick 3.8 but ford identified the buicks downfalls and weaknesses and improved on the buick design. the 3.8 is a very strong and reliable design. the earlier 3.8's (pre 96 1/2) had head gasket issues because of too many and too large water jackets in the block and heads. this can be fixed using the 99+ ford MLS headgaskets. it safe to say that 97+ engines are extremely durable even when a turbo or blower is used assuming the proper fuel upgrades and tuning is done
here is a link for you to read over even if you don't understand alot of it it's good reading

. Theres one guy runing 850 on a single port stang. Thats pretty amazing!
I'd like to submit the case of a bazillion miles on all the taxis and police cars around america with mod motors. I suppose you would want to look at minivans for other uses of the 3.8?
generally speaking, all other things equal (which they aren't) you only have a limited and fixed number of rpms in your motor from the second it is built, so a motor that needs to spin at higher rpm during normal driving is not gonna last as long as a motor that doesn't need to spin at high rpms in normal driving.
American v6's have always had the reputation of being crappier than their v8 counterparts.

waht do you think about the 1995 engine thats what i have it rebuilt with 2000 miles bbk intake bbk throttle body thats about it so far but i had alot problem with it in the past rebiult the whole dame car
this is a funny **** thread considering there are a ton of 300k+ mile 5.0 fox's on the road still running strong. yet i see problems in this section at 100k. how does this make the 3.8 a "stronger" engine? yes, there are a handful of 3.8s that last quite a bit, but you see much more 5.0s running stronger than ever.
I don't know much about the 4.0 yet, I had a 3.8 and like everyone said, it is a bulletproof motor. It's only downfall being the gaskets. Knowing what to watch for before things get really messed up will save you money in the long run, just know that you WILL have to change the head gaskets and intake gaskets. If you use a quality gasket set when this starts to happen, you can get many miles of abuse out of one without a problem.
