Itook my friends 02 vert V6 by a fender in just under a 1/4 mile. But he doesn't know how to launch an auto. And he's bone stock.

UHHH launching a stock auto even a GT is nothing more than mashing the pedal off the line.

being it's a vert and an auto will make it a closer race but he still should have won.

1. Make sure OD is off.

2. Lock up the torque convertor by holding the brake and pressing the gas until the brakes barly hold.

3. About 500-600rpm from redline shift from Drive to 2nd to firm up the shift.

4. Again about 500-600rpm from redline shift back to Drive.

Maybe it's all in my head but it sure seemed to work. Alsohe was trying to shift 1->2->D.

no need to turn the OD off as it has nothing to do with launches or shift performance of an auto.

turnin off OD only locks the trans from shifting into 4th from third which with it on will only shift into 4th at 90mph at WOT

also powerbreaking a singleport auto does absoutly nothing but heat up the trans. it will give you no better 60' time then just mashing the gas off of idle. the stock stall speed is too low for powerbreaking to be effective. it's also called loading up the converter not locking it up but i think most of us understood what you meant.

i have a 2500 stall and powerbreaking is usless even with that stall speed. i should have went with my gut instead of listening to the tranny shop and went witha 2800-3000 stall. that's for anybody even with a stock 3.8. if you want nice launches with an auto get a shift kit or Jerry mod and at least a 2800 stall with 3.45's 3.73's or 4.10's

to beat a cougar 5spd you only need 3.45's or 3.73's with an LSD T-lok will be fine on an auto singleport with full bolt-ons. 4.10's will do also as a stock or bolt on singleport with 4.10's LSD2800 stall and shift kit will launch pretty hard for only 125rwhp. torque is what singleports are all about

2000 Cougar:
2.5L V6, 24 Valve
curb weight3,013 lbs.
170 HP@ 6,250 rpm; 165 ft lb @ 4,250 rpm

1998 Mustang:
3.8L V6, 16 Valve
curb weight 3,375 lbs.
150 HP @ 4,000 rpm; 215 ft lb @ 2,750 rpm

He's got more HP and is more that 300 lbs. lighter. But that torque difference can swing it your way, maybe.

but the 2.5L cougar will wind to 6800rpm's where the singleport will only do 5200 tops and it's wise to shift them at about 4900. the high winding engine will pull the first 2 gears better than the low end grunt of the stock geared singleport 3.8
