I know this is prolly a dumb question but wat exactly is the overdrive for and when and how am i supposed to use it. i have a automatic 99. Also the other drive gears when are they supposed to be used.
Unless you see OD off on your gauges (a green light) then it's on. There is a gray button on the side of the shifter that turns it on and off. Overdrive saves gas by changing up the shifting points/ratios during normal driving. In other words, it makes you shift through the gears quicker keeping your rpms down and saving gas. Another way to look at it is, at 55 mph you might be in a high 3rd gear running with OD off, with it on, the car will shift to 4th droping the RPMS down to 1800.
overdrive locks the car out of 4th gear, thats it, if you go more then 50 mph i turn it on, less i shut it off, it saves gas, having it off around town keeps it from boging,
