Have you checked the battery connections? They could be corroded keeping it from charging the battery.

the battery connections are fine, a little dust, but i can get that off. the battery is 2 years old, and it is not a big name brand one. could the alternator have anything to do with it?

what is the alternetors purpose anywayz?

Can you get it running?
Batteries Plus will run a check on the battery and alternator for you for free. So will Advance and Auto Zone.

Sounds like the car (alternator) is not charging the battery.

Do you have a volt ohm meter? If you do get the car running and set the meter to DC volts and connect it to the battery. It should read at LEAST 13.5 volts, anything below that means the altenator is not charging it.

It's 12.5 volts, not 13.5.

And the purpose of the alternator is to power eletrical accessories while the car is running, and to charge the battery/keep it charged while the car is on.
