Default Headers

I saw somewhere today that if you get headers like some LT'S you should spray them with some high temp paint like from Autozone or somewhere it this true? If so why would you need to do that? I'm guessing that it helps protect them or something. Reason i'm asking i'm getting some MAC LT'S soon.

Default RE: Headers

I spray painted my headers for my camaro with high temp paint like that. Usually people do it to protect them/ keep them from rusting. My headers were used so already had some rust on them so i sanded and painted them pretty much just to make them look better.

It does help if you do it the right way, just painting them doesnt do anything you have to really sand or sandblast the headers first, then paint them then cure the paint. If you dont have a was to cure it the paint just flakes off after the first drive and ur work goes wasted. People cure it using a blow torch or actually putting them in their over, ive also seen a way to use the head of the car to do it, you put them on and then heat the car off for a certain amount of time, then let it cool, then heat it up again and cool again and so on.

If your really looking for protection theres really nothin that compares to doing it the right way and ceramic coating them, if you just want them to look better id say paint is ok but if they are new anyways id say coat them the right way.

So when i get the LT'S go and buy some good high temp paint from an auto parts store. Then make sure the headers are clean and then apply several coats of the paint right? It will probably be a couple of months beforeI get them butI just want to know everythingI need to know beforeI get them.

more or less just sand the entire surface. Am I looking to make it smoother by sanding? What grit sand paper are we talking here?

i would start with somethin course like 80-150 and go down to about 220-300 smooth but also abrasive, on a very fine not, so it will exept the paint, make sure they cure well so the paint doesnt flake off due to the heat and vibrations

So sand them down to get them some what smooth and then to cure them let them heat up and then cool and keep doing that for a while?
