newbie rear end question

can some one explain to me what people are reffering to when they use the term 'rearend'? i know (i think?) it has something to do with the gears/axle etc.. but what does the number mean, and is bigger better? or just differnt?

when people say rear end it normally means the entire rear end like the carrier the diff the axles and the axle housing but more specifically we speak about the diff!! 8.8 is on the gt's cobra(irs) and the 7.5 is in the v6's, as for 3.55 3.73 4.10 etc these are gear ratios the higher that number the faster your acceleration but it will lower your top speed without a chip!!! the 8.8 is def a stronger rear end but the 7.5 is adequite for the v6 it can handle upwards of 300hp!! bigger yes better not always remember the 7.5 is lighter then the 8.8!!!!
