I'd suggest having a pro do it for you at this stage - but it depends on the shop for turn around time. Might take a weekend, might take a month.
The 4.2L only comes as a cast unit - there isn't an upgrade to it, but don't worry about breaking it. Nobody ever has. Pistons and other moving parts would be good to upgrade for any high hp application.
A lot of people assume there is a forged 4.2L crank, like there is a forged 3.8L crank upgrade....however the only 4.2L crank is the stock unit from Ford.... but it is strong enough for any application.
well i plan on havin about 9k to spend on my car in about 4 months so i want your guys input as to how you would spend the money? and prices of the parts you would purchase. and please dont tell me to sell my car and get a more expensive one cuz i already explained above y i dont wanna do that i rather customize my car to my likings instead of just buyin a new one. thanks in advance
Find a used 4.2L short block at a junk yard out of a 97 F150 (had the best hp/tq out of all of them that year). Port you Mustang heads, pugrade the valve train, get a good blower cam and put a Pro Charger on it.
