Default Water temperature sensor

I was first informedthat the reason my car was overheating, was because of a faulty water temperature sensor. I was told that it is behind the alternator, next to the block (towards the front) The piece I was given to replace, doesn’t fit where they said it's located on the engine. Does anyone know where the water temperature sensor is located on a 2001 v6 Mustang? Any help would be appreciated. They also said it could be my radiator... but I'd rather replace a $15 dollar part than a $300 dollar part.
