AFE CAI install - Slight engine ping?
Hi guys,
Just finisged installing the AFE CAI and a GT take off muffler. Well, power inclrease is much better with the CAI, and the GT take off muffler sounds great! I'm so glad that I had got one (two to be exact as one can not find JUST the right one) ;o) Question - Since the install of the CAI and the new muffler, running the Stang on regular 87 with no tune at all, I can hear a slight engine ping when lightly tapping the gas, as well as hearing it (kinda like engine backfiring) during WOT when passing. I know that I really should get a tuner, but the CFO (A.K.A. - WIFE) will not allow it this year.... But anyway, I can hear it a bit. Would changing to a higher octane gas help with the engine ping with these mods? I think that the best way to tune this out would be with a tuner, which would adjust the timing a bit and other things, but can this be resolved with say... 89 or 91 octane gas rather than my usual 87? Don't get me wrong, the ping is not super loud or consistant. Only occurs during the above stated conditions, and is no where bad enough to cause major concern. What would you guys recommend that I do? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !

Try unhooking the battery cables overnight. That might correct any alight A/F ratio issues. If that does not work, run some fuel system cleaner and try a tank of 89, see if it helps. Check out the 4.0 V6 sub-forum under the 2005-2008 heading.
You don't need to leave the battery disconnected all night. Just disconnect the negative terminal and touch it to the positive terminal then reconnect it, that will erase all the computes memory so it can re-learn.
That takes just as much time as leaving them disconected overnight, and w/o the sparks. Leaving them off overnight leaves no doubt theat the ECU is reset. Dicussing how long to leave the cable off is pointless, the point is it nees to be done.
