You will have to buy MIL's so your CEL does not come on.

I think it is mainly a question of your state laws. If you have to pass a visual inspection, get high flow cats. Dont gut them, it sounds pretty crappy and it does very little for power, if anything. You will get a code as your car will"know" the cats arent functioning properly. It will not afffect the way the computer runs the car however, it just sets the code to let you know. You need to get MIL Eliminators to correct this problem. You can get them from www.summitracing.com or other speed shops. If your state has a visual inspection though, it willnotice this and you will fail. I would just buy a good header back system without cats and keep the stocker for inspections if need be. Or again, go with some good high flow cats.

it's not state emissions policy. we have counties around here that don't require emissions testing. that does not supercede federal emissions laws.

yes the EPA did go around in counties near mine and visually inspected cars as they came in for inspections. no cats and they got a huge fine. the rednecks that live in those counties buy a new car and right off the bat saw the cat off because their county is emissions exempt as far as state laws are concerned. why?? doesn't make sense. when no state or county is exempt from federal law mandating an approved emissions system on the car. no car in the US made after 1973 is exempt from having emissions controls

My state has no inspections whatsoever. I understand perfectly well what federal law says, but it is up to the states to enforce the law. In states that have no inspections, then what difference does it make? That was my point. In theory, the only way you will get caught in a state that requires no inspection is if you get pulled over and they inspect you (if a cop pulls you over for noise violation for example) or if you go to a repair shop and they turn you in. I have seen many late model vehicles running with pretty wild combos on the streets of kansas with current registration. That was my point and I stick by it. I am not for vehicles that pollute, but most guys that work on their cars to improve performance have their cars tuned well enough they would pass any sniffer test. My 81 Trans Am had a Carbed 355 that passed the sniffer test in SoCal (car was registered in KS) but would never pass a visual.

i had a 70 nova with a straight 6 that passed the federal sniffer and yes the federal gov't funds the states to enforce the federal laws. when they don't and the feds are tipped off they step in. like i said i have seen it happen. it's mostly because people think because their state or county doesn't require emissions they can do what they want. that not true like you and i agree. however all i am saying is you never know when the EPA will do a check at your station or even a county wide inspection and they usually do them for 6 months in cooperation with local police to ensure people don't try to avoid them by waiting a month after their inspection is up to go get their car inspected in hopes the EPA is gone.

they nailed about 8,000 people in 2 counties around here in 3 months. wanna take a chance of a $2000+ fine over another $60-$100 to add high flow cats over MIL's???

i won't take that chance. it's just stupid
