p1443 code thrown
i got a check engine light so i went and got it read and it said it was a p1443 code. the guys said it could be and exust leak or a slow vaccum leak or a number of other things. anyone here know wats it ismore liekly to be .
Ihad it once too as well! All it turned out to be was the guy at the gas station put the cap on wrong! Try taking off and putting your gas cap back on and reset it before you start spending money.

Your egr is your Exhaust Gas Recovery. The valve itself looks like a flying saucer. The solenoid is a small, around 3" x 2", rectangular box with two rubber hoses and an electrical connector. Those rubber hoses and a tube off your EGR valve both hook up to your right exhaust header. Both are mounted on the back right corner of your upper intake manifold. Try getting a can of elctric cleaner and clean the electrical connector and replace or clean the rubber tubes.
To reset your code disconnect the negative cable from your battery for about 5 minutes.
I have had this problem in the past and have replaced the fuel purge cannister solenoid. This looks like a small coke can and will be inline with some vacum lines at the back right corner of your engine compartment. These run 40 - 50 at AutoZone. I would try changing the hoses and cleaning the electrical connectors first. Also there is a small switch in that same line. It has 3 wires one is purple and white. Be careful it will fit on your A/C low pressure switch whitch has two wires one solid purple. When I bought my 96 it took me a long time and alot of wire chasing to figure out those two had been reversed by the previous owner which kept my A/C from working and a CEL, Check Engine Light.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
