Winter Weather Tips
Ok well i was just wondering if anyone had any tips for driving in snow, sleet, ice. Last year i was nearing a 4 way stop and i was going like 10MPHand well the breaks locked up and i was headed for the stop sign... didn't hit it though. It is a 2000 with no Traction Controle or ABS. Thanks...
#1 thing is good tires. I drove my 02 only one year in snow. I had to go down dirt roads that were just packed down. Even if i didnt stop i would get stuck. I ended up going out and getting almost off-road tires. After that i had no traction problems at all except for steering, and i bought like 125 tires and put them up front. The smaller the better!!! I paid $150 for all, used but great shape.
#2 Weight, will hurt you milage but not by much. You want to get fully sealed non-breakable sand bags and put them directly over the rear axle. This help a lil with the stock tires on it.
#3 DONT HIT THE BREAKS IF AN OBJECT IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU!!! STUPIN morons do not understand that the wheels lock up when the brakes are applied. Let off the brake and aim for the sides.
Tires were like these, of course smaller and not as much tread. But the ***** stuck out further than these. Just get no name brands because in snow is doesnt matter.

cheap winter retreads with deep lugs and give yourself some distance to stop. even ABS sucks on snow and ice. alot of time when a non abs car locks up like my 98 and your steering is gone let off of the break to regain steering and slowly apply the brake back on. if you kep sliding forward jam it in reverse and give it some gas. only in a last ditch effort though

also for braking tips, since u dont have ABS remember to pump ur brakes to keep them from locking up
and a nother tip to help with acceleration / not spinning the hell out of ur tiers on a slick spot is when from a stop just skip first and put it in 2nd. even if u have an auto, manualy put in in 2nd
and just remeber to go slow and brake a lot sooner then u may think u need to.
your computer will not cut power, I'm sorry. If you have a slushbox, it may not put it into reverse, but it sure as hell wont cut engine power.
You don't pump your brakes on ice either. Gradually apply them, and you should never approach the point of locking them on ice, because once you lock them, you're in deep **** on ice.
And if you have an auto, you cant make it launch in 2nd. If you put the lever in 2nd, all that does is kepe it from going to 3rd. if you put it in 3rd, it keeps it from going to 4th.
the last part was good advice. Drive slow, and be very smooth and easy with all controls.

It wouldnt hurt your engine to throw it in reverse. I would be pissin out blood for a auto tranny tho. The only reason the "computer cuts out" would be traction control. You dont want to throw it down into a lower gear because youre rear end will slide. Dont pump your brakes, even tho i hate my ABS i love it.
O Yeah, ALWAYS START OUT SLOW!. I put it in second and barley tip the gas

putting it in '2' keeps it in 2nd gear to start. ask ANY auto owner on this site, they'll tell you that.
