Default almost ruined my engine today

coming home from work about 3 miles from home on my 60 mile drive my oil filter decides to burst. not real bad but bad enough to lose 2.5 quarts by the time i got home.

i noticed a decent dent in the filter the other day when working under the car to put a few more zip ties on a few things. didn't think anything of it. well tonight i thought i toasted my engine. i could smell oil burning when i came to a stop so i nursed it home 1.25 miles after i realized it was leaking oil.

ran it up on ramps after finding nothing on top o the engine and found where the dent was was now poped outward with a split in the middle where oil has been sprayed out.

never lost oil pressure but the bottom of the car from the K-member back to the rear got a good rust proofing.

i got real lucky as it could have happened on the PA turnpike alot further from home at higher speeds and i probably would have never smelt the oil burning going 75 mph till it was too late

learned 1 thing. never use a dented oil filter and if you find a dent or cause one putting it on just scrap the filter as you may have compromised it's integrity

I can honestly say that through all the stuff I've destroyed, an oil filter has never been one. lol

Take pics, I gotta see it!

I would of **** myself.
A friend of mine told me that after a certin oil pressure your oil pressure gauge reads the same no matter what. He noticed this because he had a aftermarket oil pressure gauge.

too late i threw the oil filter in my wood burning stove last night. that oil sure throws heat in that stove.

i'll dig it out of the ashes and see if i can get a pic of the rupture.

Remember the oil filter is under system pressure so if a tiny split is in the casing of the filter, the whole oil sytem will become drained out under pressure from the oil pump. Good job you got on top of it.
A few months ago I also had oil changed at a supermarket & they messed up & almost blew the motor. All because of a leak at the filter. Took only about 50 miles to 1/2 drain the sump.

Steve.

You know your a redneck when your engine is zip-tied together...... Jiffy Lube... Haha Hope their standards have improved the past couple of years. Remeber that whole thing on 20/20 where they hid the cameras and they guys just acted like they were changing it. And if they did change the oil they wouldnt do the filter.... Thats why i do mine
