it sure is your brakes... i replaced my rear brake pads and actually had to replace the whole drive side rear caliper... i was goin about 40 down the road to my house and wasnt payin attention and had to push the brakes a little too hard like a day after i put the pads and caliper on and when i got out of my car at home it smelt the smell you did.. kinda smells like someone has been welding around your car right?

Any advice??
Don't race a car that isn't meant for racing. You won't get that smell anymore.

If it is a standard then you may have down shifted and the clutch is slipping. Bad smell is the result. Also per above, brakes will give a foul odour as well.

DO NOT RACE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It may be the brakes, if it warms uproll downthe windows see if you can smell it at a traffic light. I just went through replacing a frozen brake calipar and the wheel was a mildly warmer than the others due to radiant heat.

yeah, burnt up pads have a real unique smell to them, as coolant has its unique smell to it. my guess would be the brakes, or if you are shifting hard, could be the clutch you are smelling...

if it is that kind of dentist office type smell, it is almost 100 percent the brakes. just replaced the pads and turned the rotors on my gfs cougar, and thats what it smelled like.

Today I was racing an Si which I was ahead by like half a car. I was going about 93mph and we were on the highway and the traffic built up so I slowed down. As soon as I slowed down I noticed a horrible burning smell (not as in tires) and I knew it was coming from the engine I just don't know what it is. This is the second time this has happened to me in the same week. Any advice??
Brakes (especially drums) take a little while to bed in. They can easily be overheated during this period. I'd suggest taking it a bit more easily for a few days, gently apply the brakes & gradually increase brakeing power over 1-2 days of driving .
Mustangs from 94 and up didn't have drum brakes...
