Default Overheating problem, please help!

Ok so here's the deal I have a 1996 V6 mustang. Within the last month my car started to overheat. At first I put a 160 degree thermostat in, changed the hoses, and put new coolant in. This seemed to fix the problem now it goes through a lot of coolant, but I never see any under the car. The tempature will go to the A-L on 'normal' and then will cool down after it stay there for awhile, i haven't seen it hit the red yet. If i run the heater it will put out hot air when the engine is cool but cold air when its hot, kinda wierd. The oil appears to be a normal color. If you think you know whats going on let me know any imput will help out, thanks.

Look under the oil cap. If it has a tan goopy residue on it, your head gaskets are blown or worse, heads are cracked. But it sounds mild right now, so if you catch it early, you can just replace the head gaskets. Look for the tan goop under the oil cap.

I took it to the mechanic today. Its a blown intake and head gasket, 1300 bucks, that really sucks

Make sure you replace them with good quality gaskets so they never give you trouble again. Look into Felpro Gaskets.

Its not really that hard to do, all you need is basic tools and a torque wrench.

Hey since im going to be tearing the whole top end of the engine apart to fix the problem i was wondering is there anything i could do to my engine enternally to add a couple of horses, that wouldn't be to hard to do or cost a lot of money. Maybe cams? I don't know, if you could tell me what i should add and what it would cost I would sure appreciate it.

I recently replaced the heads with a set I bought off EBAY, came with gaskets, and bolts, all for $280

Took me the weekend to tear down and install. Fixed my overherating problem.
