Someone needs to post a 'How-To' paper about this. I have many of these same questions. I got a 2001 and I know all my parts will work. Is it cheaper to put a crank in since I have all the parts for it? Or is it cheaper to just drop a 4.2 engine in?

It's cheaper to buy a 4.2 shortblock(block, crank, rods, and pistios(allready assembled)) and put your 01+ heads, intakes, oil pan, etc.. on it.
I got my 4.2 crank for $190, if you look arround they can be found brand new for $200 + shipping.

How much did it cost you total to install?
