Default need help fast

I put a new engine and tranny in my 96. they both came from a 98. ever since i dropped em in, it hasn't ran right. I test drove the engine/tranny in the donor car, and it worked fine. in mine, the overdrive won't come on, so i don't have fourth gear. also, i have no torque at all from a stop. there are spots in my gear/rpm range where i can floor it and get some response out of it, but for the most part it's driving really sluggish. I don't think it's the motor.
I also have a shifting flare.
If I can't find a solution to this by tuesday morning, I'm taking it to a shop to swap trannys back to my old one.
HELP ME SAVE $300!!!
any ideas?

well it wasn't a bad deal to start with. I got the car for two grand. then i bought the engine/tranny for 400. problem is, the new tranny sucks. gotta put my old one back in.
I'm lost on the thermostat issue though.
