I have a 2001 3.8L mustang. it has about 80,000 miles on it....i was thinking about putting in 3.73 gears but im still skeptical about it because of the price of the gears and install running aroung $650 all together. Can anyone who has done this modification tell me if it is worth all the money or not? sense my car is already starting to get old with that many miles am i better off saving the money and buying a newer car?

80k miles isn't that old. Plenty of people on here have cars with 150k+ miles. If it has been taken care of and you plan to continue to keep it in shape, it should be fine. As for the mod itself, IDK. Hopefully some others will chime in, use the "search" function in the meantime.

Yeah, it's worth it, but make sure to at least have a t-lok or DTT installed at the same time in order to avoid another install fee. It'll really wake your sixxer up.

no. in simple terms, it was cheaper for ford to build a rear end for the v6 that only allowed 1 wheel to spin. a tlok/posi/etc goes in the rear differential and allows both wheels to have power. its suggested to do this modification with gears because compared to the price of parts for your rear diff, the install is expensive, and you dont want to have to pay it twice when it could just be done the first time with not much extra work.

+1, V6s did not come with a limited slip, now you may have a traction control, but TC and LS are two totally different things. Due to the high price of gas the call will be up to you, is it a good mod, yes, is it noticible, yes, will it burn more gas, yes, expect to see a 1-3 MPG drop, depending on driving style, once everything is done.

80k miles is fairly young. ive heard of mustangs still running strong with 200k on them. really, a car can last forever, if you wanna replace major things (engine, tranny, etc.). its all about the maintainance. my car has 140k on it, and (knocking on wood), runs better than a lot of stangs around town that have far less miles. mod it!
