Default a/c compressor

ok so my a/c compressor is making a clicking sound. i was told by a mechanic that the compressor is going out and that i need to replace it. my question is has anyone had this problem before and if so do i really need to replace the whole thing or will just the clutch fix it? i dont want to buy the whole thing if its not necessary.

thanks

Usually a compressor making noise is a signal of it going out. And to be honest, I'm not sure if you can buy just the clutch. And it might not be the clutch making the noise. Your best bet is to just get the whole thing. I'm a mechanic for a living, and I've never rebuilt a compressor. We just replace them when **** goes wrong with them. That's how it is with a lot of parts like that. In the old days you used to rebuild them, now it's more time and cost effective to just replace.
