okay so from my understanding i should go with 99+ 4.2L f150 block .....i would also keep the crankshaft thats in the 4.2L and everything else (heads, cam, manifolds, pullys, oil pan.....etc. the basics) would be used from the 3.8L??

i looked up some info on the swap....
is this accurate;

99-00 split port heads

- 4.2 shortblock or longblock
- You can use the 4.2 heads
- Mustang upper and lower intake and fuel rail
- Mustang 3.8 water pump
- Auto trans = 4.2 or 01-up flexplate
- 5spd = 01-up or rebalanced 3.8 (0 or neutral) flywheel and a pilot bearing
- V6 Mustang bellhousing
- Re-use your stock cam position sensor
- 01-up 3.8 oil pan
- 01-up 3.8 oil pick-up tube and screen
- 4.2 damper or 01-up 3.8 damper (use the 01 pulley for blower cars)
- Re-use the stock 3.8 oil pressure sender and tube
- Re-use the Mustang headers
- You can use the 4.2 or 3.8 dipstick. Just keep track of where 5 qts puts the mark when refilling with oil.

Correct. A MAJOR over looked part is the neutral flywheel. 99 and early 00 3.8L have externally weighted flywheels, and it translates to a vibration in the motor if you use the wrong one. (Speaking from first hand experience on this one..... my flywheels got switched by mistake on one of my swaps, and we fought the vibration for the LONGEST time trying to chase it down. Spent hundreds of $$ on sensors and I tore the motor down twice in the car looking for a bad piston, rod, valve, anything....)

They are the same, lower intake is as well. The 4.2L upper intake is more similar to the Windstar intake, but a lot heavier and made of cast aluminum instead of composite. It' too big to use, so that is why most use the mustang upper intake.

So the Mustang and F-150 heads are the same? So is the only real difference between the 3.8 and is the 4.2 the rotating assembly?
