Another problem with my mustang.
So I was driving home the other day and I noticed my car was hotter than normal. When I got to my house my car was smoking bad. I popped the hood and there was a lot of liquid all over. Could I have blown my water pump? And if so what other parts would I need to replace it?
There seems to be pieces of metal in the lower radiator hose. Is that just from the water pump or could it be something else too? And could it be causing the rattle sound.
Sorry for the noob question once again. Haven't owned my mustang long enough to learn more about it. Just trying to be safe and avoiding costly repairs.
Thank you.

That doesn't sound good.
Are you sure one of the radiator hoses didn't swell and explode? What year is the car? How many miles? If it's old/high mileage it's likely the radiator is clogged which could give you heating problems. Try flushing it our replacing it if you have the money. Replacing the radiator on my 96 was the best $200 i ever spent on my car...

Well since there was metal in the coolant, It might be the impeller inside the water pump or something like that. You might be on the right track with the water pump, but that doesnt explain the smoke so much, unless the water pump went and the hose went with it.
If you have metal in the line, you're about to hate me. Shredded metal will have travelled through your entire cooling system since you kept driving. You have to really flush the coolant passages in your lower intake and heads to clear them. Also, you'll probably need to replace the radiator at this point as well. Flushing will help, but if you have metal in there and you don't get rid of it, it will just cause more issues down the line. Any loose metal could tear up the insides of the rubber coolant lines as well as destroy the new water pump.
replace the obvious broken parts and then do a coolant system pressure check and see if the head gaskets went to hell in a hand basket.Thats probably what caused the hose to pop then with no coolant the pump could have got hot and seized.
Definately check the head gaskets though with all the steam you seen.

You need to discover what caused the overheating first, was it 1)the water pump failing (sounds favorite at this point). Or 2)did a hose blow & the pump ran dry & the engine consequently overheated because of no coolant or 3) the heads are leaking & this caused the overheating & also failure of the water pump (unlikely). Thats assuming the metal is from the pump impellor & not rusted crud from the engine block, which can also cause overheating & block your radiator/coolant channels.
Lots of fun! Steve.

Sorry it took me so long to reply, but I was checking all my hoses and I noticed that one was blown. Its this one:
I checked the coolent level and it's a normal level but when the incedent happend coolent had spilt. Also, the chunks of metal are mainly in my lower hose. The upper hose seemed fine. I was also told that when this happens that water can go into your engine so I checked that and the oil seemed fine. I'm thinking that it is the water pump impeller that blew and caused the chunks of metal in the hose and the blown hose near the spark plugs caused the white smoke.
What do you guys think?
Thank you for all your help.
Oh and to answer the Brxan: The car has 137K miles and the engine has about 25K miles on it. All cooling systems such as radiator, water pump etc were replaced with the new engine. Have no idea how this could have happend.

O.K. mate now we have a bit more info.
Since you have metal in the lower hose you need to find out what that is from. It is likely from your water pump impeller. So you need to drain the coolant system, remove the pump for inspection, backflush the engine block for 15 mins ( spray it in the top hose pipe so water drains out at the bottom of the block) & the radiator with a hosepipe. If your really keen, flush out the heater rad also. If the water pump is bad replace it , replace ALL coolant hoses or at least any which show ANY type of imperfection.
I'm assuming you live in Florida (O.K. I see your from Arizona) if you attempt this!!! A head gasket should not fail in 25,000 miles, so at this point I'd rule that out. You would also use more coolant, have white smoke out the exhaust or engine oil which looked like chocolate milk depending where the gasket had failed. Champagne tiny bubbles in the rad neck is another tell tale of failing head gasket.
Regards Steve

Thanks all, I'm certain that it is my water pump and will need replacing and replace the hose and flush the system. One thing that is concerning me is that if water could have passed into my oil.
I don't think there was any white smoke coming out of the exhaust or anything like that but I would like to post a picture of the color of the oil and ask for your opinions to see if it's of normal color.
