I just bought a 86 LX 3.8L, and I want to get rid of the A/C to get a few more ponies out to the motor. I've never done this. Can someone tell me how or where I can find more info on this? Thanks for your help.

 

Is the a/c working. Honestly, you won't free up enough to make a noticeable difference.

 

I am in the process of removing mine. I havent started it yet due to lack of funds right now. I was told thought that you need to take it to the shop and have them drain all the fluids associated with that system. Once you have that done, all you need is a AC bypass pulley. Rockauto sells them for about 30 bucks. Then its as simple as unbolting the unit and putting in the pulley.

Ditching the A/C is more about weight than the parastic drag on the belt. The A/C compressor unit uses a clutch, and at wide open throttle, the A/C is kicked off.

If you get rid of it, there are a lot of lines, the compressor and the condenser that you can get rid of. But I would do that after taking out all the insulation, rear seat delete, stereo delete, tubular suspension etc..... All you add is a small bracket and pulley to wrap the belt correctly.

 

thanks guys. it doesn't work so rather than spend the money to fix it id rather just get rid of it. i found a bracket to relocate the power steering pump, so i just need to get it drained.
