Yea.....that was a shock the first time I changed it. Worse than all of the burnt brake pads and tires one can imagine.

while I was replacing the trans extension housing seal today I noticed that my rear-differential has no fill plug nor a drain plug. it's just a plain cover. is this common to 1999-2004 ford mustang v6? or I'm just not looking properly. even if I pull the cover off and seal it back, it will be impossible for me to fill it back in. I've worked with my 4x4 Jeep and AWD Mountaineer so this is somehow strange to me.

No drain plug, but look for the fill plug on the case, pointing toward the front of the car (near the pinion). If you want a drain plug, you'll need an aftermarket cover.

gotcha, I didn't realize they have the fill plug there. Is that still 80w90 or any synthetic equivalent? friction modifier needed?

Put what the manual states for your car, if its stock rear. Friction modifier isnt needed in the 7.5 unless you have a limited slip diff installed.
