Exclamation Changing Fuel Filter!

Hello fellow V6'ers....So my car is getting some V10 gas mileage, so i want to change my fuel filter. I imagine it hasn't been changed in a while too...

Is this a fairly simple install? The guy at pepboys said that it was like a 30 minute job. Will i need any special tools? I've actually never changed a fuel filter before, but it sounds pretty harmless.

Is it located underneath the trunk? Anyways some more information would be great, ill try searching around and see if i cant find my Haynes manual.

You'll need a 5/16" fuel fitting tool (assuming the v6 fittings are the same size as GT and Cobra fittings), along with basic hand tools to remove the clamp that usually holds the filter in place. It's about a 10 minute job if you've done it before, with the hardest part being the removal of the fuel lines from the filter, since they can be stubborn.

The filter is above the rear axle, directly underneath the high point of the trunk. You'll see it when you get under there, and with a solid axle car you'll have plenty of room to access it.

Well thats about the only thing i don't have, is it absolutely necessary? And if i do need it, is it something that pep boys or a similar store would rent out for the day?

But good stuff, ill go locate the fuel filter and check it out, see what im getting into.

Absolutely necessary. It's a very inexpensive tool, you can get a set of them for under $20. Every Autozone / Checker / Napa /etc will carry them. Looks like this:

I think I paid $5 for mine and it takes longer to jack the car up and set it on sstands than it does to change.

Exclamation

3 more questions!

So okay, my haynes manual doesn't even say to use a special fuel fitting tool. It says to just use a screw driver. What does this tool do? Also the manual says i need to relieve the fuel pressure, i just un-poped the gas lid. Is this how i relieve the fuel pressure? Or is that unnecessary?

And is it going to be an issue if my car is on a hill? Will the gas leak out onto me? The tank is nearly full. How much gas should i expect to leak out?

And are these the clips im supposed to pop off? (the rusted things on the end) If so i can probably take them off by hand, is this the best method?

I have heard that the fuel will leak so make sure to have a rag to stuff in the fuel lines after you pop the lines. I dont think how much fuel you have or being on a hill will be a problem. If you are worried about fuel pressure pop the fuel shut off switch in the truck of the car.
