You can get the same results with the stock intake, you just have to remove the restrictor/silencer rubber tube that connects to the plastic filter housing.

In this photo from 5.0 Mustang they show an 03' Cobra filter housing which is similar to the one in your sons V6, that rubber tube pops off to supply the same exact result as a cold air intake.

ive been thinking about doing this for awhile, is this really just as good as any cai?

Thats what everyone says, no testing to back it up but at a basic bolt on level it makes sense.

It is a dyno proven mod to equal a full CAI. You'll get a little out of it, but don't expect much.

Writeup on what. There was a dyno comparison listed in the 5.0 forum a long while back before the site changed showing the difference between a drop in/silencer removal and a CAI and it was like a 1 or 2 rwhp difference between the two and that's on a push rod 5.0. I can attest, little difference, the extra 1/2 rwhp comes from the filter being located in the fenderwell where the air is a little more cooler and denser than inside the engine bay, but it's still not much at all. You can have a 1/2 rwhp flux between 1 dyno run and the next. That's why you make 3 pulls and take the average.

I just have a k&n drop in with silencer removed and I run high 12s. On the new edge cars there is NO gain to be had with a cai. The 05s on the other hand do respond well to a cai and tune. Ford built the airbox on our cars perfect and will support 450 hp. Save your money and buy him a tuner. It will give a lil more power but you can set the rev and speed limiters on it and it does improve fuel economy a little.

i ran 530 in mine 520 just seems to thin IMO, at 75k i swapped to 1030 in the summer and 530 in the winter, even though at that point the car was taken off DD status.

also i will NEVER EVER run royal purple, the following pic is off of SVTP, guy had 12,000 miles on an 03 cobra and changed with RP every 2500 miles

Looks like an issue with pcv system not breathing properly.> Some kind of contamination huh??

As far as dyno results go I havnt seen anything for a V6 test, but yes there are dyno comparo's for the V8's, I didnt think to mention those examples though.

As for a write up, there are none that I know of but its super easy.
Just take the filter housing off and pull the rubber silencer out, drop the K&N in and thats it.
