i have a 99 v6 mustang, i can shift all gears up and down but if i go into 5th i cant take it out and down shift. i have to come to a complete stop and shift. does anyone know what could cause this to happen?

Does it grind when going into 5th or is it hard to pull it into 5th?

 

I had similar problems with a previous car (not a mustang). Eventually I couldn't even get into 5th gear. I ended up having to replace the transmission

 

no, it does not grind at all. i can put it in 5th just fine and when i take it out >to neutral> it doesnt shift, just stays in 5th gear. i can move the shifter anywhere ( i.e.1st gear) and its still in 5th. the only way to correct it is to stop, shut the car off, and put it in reverse, then start it again.

Hmmm, I am not a transmission expert but it could be a bad synchro or bad gear fork but it seems more like a really bad synchro because you can take it out of gear once the car is stopped and the engine is off.

 

i will check all of that and post back if i find a problem.
