Default Rear end swap

I was in a wreck and cracked my back axles. What would be the best way to fix this? To replace just the axles or the whole rear end? And do the axles from a v8 fit a v6?

I know on the SN95's the 7.5" (V6) rear and the 8.8" (V8) take different axles, I would assume the New Edge is the same.

If I were you I would find a low miles 8.8" and throw that in, it would be quick, not too hard and you don't need to worry about fragments from the broken axles.

^8.8 is the best way to go as it is about as much as a used 7.5 and it is stronger. It helps to have a friend help you as these monsters are heavy, I know, I swapped mine out.

all you need is 3 jackstands and you can swap the rear end yourself. 2 for the axle tubes and 1 for the pinion side of pumpkin. I should add you need jackstands to hold the body up too.

hardest part is getting the uppers on.

Nope, you are wrong.

94-98: The 28 spline V6 and GT Axles are 100% swapable. Not the 31 spline Cobra
99-04: The 28 spline V6 and GT Axles are 100% swapable. Not the 31 spline Cobra, Mach 1, Bullitt

Now for the rest of the post.

Many people say to swap over to an 8.8" and in this case wish so mcuh internal damage I dont think it would be a bad idea. It is also possible that the axle tubes may have bent and even the mount locations.

It is important to take your Mustang to a good shop with a laser guided frame machine and have them check the correct alignment of the rear end once the new one is in to prevent dog legging.

What is your budget for a rear end?

There are several on ebay under $1000 and that includes a few Mach 1 31-spline rear ends.
For a 28 spline GT rear end, $350-500 is an average price.

You can also put an IRS under there in case you want awesome ride quality.

A 1999 IRS would be the cheapest because its only a 28 spline but is just fine for anyone looking for comfort and not going to beat it.

2001 Got a 31 spline setup and a little stronger cradle.

03/04 Got larger 31 spline half shafts, brace and Bilstein shocks.

All of the IRS's came with 11.65" rear vented brakes with ABS but if I remember right, 03/04 was the only year to get rear vented Brembo's.

neo beat me to the punch, your best bet is to get a low milage GT rear of the same era and swap, but the others can be done for slightly bit more
