Default car stalling

Ive got a 1998 ford mustang V6 3.8l
my car runs fine the majority of the time except when my gas meter drops below a quarter tank. thats when my car will shut off on me immediately when starting. I can get the car going if i start it on neutral and drop it into drive (its an automatic) it will run if i rev the engine but when i slow down or stop itll drop below 1000 RPM n shut off. Again this only happens when it goes below a quarter tank ill fill it up itll stall again but after a few minutes of driving its good again and wont cause problems till the next time i put gas. I know some people might say "then dont let it drop below a quarter tank" im a college student and am on a limited budget so i try n put gas when the gas light turns on not before.

Thank you

Start simple, change your fuel filter, thus easy and cheap.
