Default Rear bearings/diff problem?

So I have this mustang here that I recently bought, did some work on it and took it for a drive. It was making like a grinding/rubbing type of noise. In neutral without moving theres no noise, even revving the engine. So I lifted the rear end up and when in gear, it would make noise as the tires spin. Possibly rear bearings?

Well, I took out the rear brakes and have the wheel fastened to the rotor/hub and now I can pull and push the wheel a tiny bit from both sides, but enough to hear and see it being pushed in and out. Does not seem normal.

If it was the bearings, wouldn't I have a puddle under the rear diff? (if bearing gone, the seal would probably go aswell I would think)

Thanks!

It might be the pinion bearings. When i first picked up my stang, i had a noise in the rear. Kinda made a hard to explain noise. I changed the wheel bearings and pinion bearings, the noise seemed to go away
