gauge problem
so, more reading and whatnot. looks like the 98 stang has a specific to itself fuel tank. along with that a special housing and pump. this special unit is only sold as a whole, not separate components. so then i have to go to the junkyard and hope to find a 98 to get the sending unit/pump assy because i am not spending $2-300 for a whole unit.
upon further reading i find that the SVT focus pump is an upgrade. specifically 03-05. a cross reference on autozone website tells me that the same pump is used on 05-07 escape and 04-05 freestar as well as some of the gas powered f-250 & f-350s. so it should stand to reason that if i go to the junkyard and pull a pump assy from a 98 and swap the other pump into it, then i would have a decent upgrade for a whole lot less...
btw for anyone looking at this - airtex SVT focus pump is Walbro made and autozone sells it for roughly $65. i usually shop advance, but they want $135 for it. (price match maybe)

okay, not sure about other years, but the 98 in the junkyard and in my yard has a long enough wire from the car and pump to unhook it WITHOUT dropping the tank. it clips to the bottom inside of the rear bumper. harness was a bit hard to work with from dirt, but was clean on the inside.
so i took the unit out of the junkyard, and then i hooked it to the harness in my car with the sending unit arm in a few different positions. upon putting the ignition in the run position it moved the gauge to full, half, 1/4 and 3/4 positions as i placed it there by hand. i am debating getting a new SVT focus pump as there were no cars in the junkyard with the right pump while i was there.
