Default 3.8 parts vs 4.2 v6 parts

I've bought a 2000 mustang, V6 Automatic, for my daughter a couple of years ago. Originally a 3.8 but he had swapped a 2004 4.2 v6. I just replaced the starter in it and now the bendix sometimes misses the flywheel, just whines. It will catch, but occasionally takes 2-3 times. It could be a bad stater, but I was wondering if it could be that I need a different starter. I've read in other forums that the 4.2 is actually a stroked 3.8. If that is true, then all the external parts should be the same? Thank you.

And just for fun, this car also has a BAMA upgrade, catback exhaust (which she really loves the sound), sequential tail lights, new headlights, tinted windows, short antennae, aftermarket stereo and Mach 1 speakers. Silver in color with spoilers, rear facia "MUSTANG" and panel between tail lights all painted gloss black. Thought I'd just throw that out there.
Thanks again.

Missing means it's throwing out too far, or not far enough. If it was all working before
the original went bad, then it's the new starter. You can get a bad one.. Bendix is not
the best of them...

The only other thing would be if the fly-wheel is missing teeth...
