do you have tools ? i would do it yourself. But when you take off the head you MUST have the head milled before you put it back on... or your asking for trouble. If you do get it done , make sure they do that.

most garages will charge about $1000 for head gaskets

you must have the heads checked for warpage and you should have them shaved .010" regardless. you also cannot reuse the headbolts. and get good quality gaskets

they are not hard to change but you just can't take the heads off and put the new gaskets on and put the heads right back on. they will just eventually leak again

anytime you have aluminum heads on an iron block you have to have them checked for warpage and is it always advised to get them milled .005-.010" to make a good sealing surface for the new gaskets

cobra232 is correct. There is about 8 hours labor involved to just replace both head gaskets according to AllData. Then add about $100 to get both heads checked and run over the resurfacer. So $1100.00 is about right. You may find another shop that may get that down to around $900-1000. IF you're lucky.
